COMPANIES & ORGANIZATIONS all corporate or revolutionary major players Succession: shareholder-elected board of directors MO: China was one of the first countries to abandon nationality in favour of becoming solely an economic power, following only the Originals and TIANLONG is the product of that. They are fiercely protective of their mainland holdings and people living under their jurisdiction enjoy greater stability than most other territories. They expand slowly but surely and irrevocably and produce large numbers of simple but reliable machines. They can field large numbers of unspecialised SPRWs but their military actions have been known to be far more subtle and secretive than physical violence.
GM (Global Munitions) Succession: shareholder-elected CEO & promoted board of directors MO: The root of the capitalist regime and the oldest of the Originals, GM produces primarily heavy armour, both energy and physical. Rather than increase holdings they upgrade those they already have and their military arm is fairly elite. They have a very tense relationships with TIANLONG over assassination plots, although they're no strangers to this field either. Characters: Lord Director Kieran Ready
Vulperion Succession: natural promotion MO: Young, influential company involved primarily in the biological sciences: increasing vertical farm output, terraforming, air and water filtration, life support, Lyrimony research. They are close with both GM and GOC, whose military might they rely on when their small, specialized army is spread thin. Since splitting Icarus they have developed a reputation for preferring diplomacy to violence unless absolutely necessary. Characters: CEO William Rush
Galt Operating Company (reason. purpose. self esteem) Succession: shareholder-elected OR promoted board of directors MO: The only Phalanx company, let alone Original with its founder still alive, Galt Operating Company specializes in energy efficient weaponry and power generators. They control diverse resources and are renowned for their elite military and their independence. They refuse to rely on other companies for any resource, although their connection with Vulperion is friendly and they work closely with GM. Characters: CEO John Galt
Hoshino Heavy Industries Succession: hereditary CEO MO: Specialized in finer electronics, Hoshino Heavy Industries took the fall for the security failure that allowed Aeropolis 03 to be destroyed, but its CEO's suicide opened the field for his successor - his daughter - who has moved HHI above and beyond anything anybody would have expected. Their defence batteries represent 80% of the defensive emplacements worldwide and their SPRWs have the best average accuracy in the Phalanx thanks to their company targeting systems. Characters: Empress CEO Hoshino Chihiro
Succession: hereditary CEO, shareholder-elected board of directors MO: The European Union, already tied by the Euro, were quick to sell to and become part of Glasslyn, and its might pulled in the middle east and right up to Akhtar's India and the borders of TIANLONG. They control vast amounts of land and resource and their production focus is on thrusters, boosters, and propulsion methods. Their highly mobile armed forces are renowned as peacekeepers and for taking up Maxim's mantle as an anti-insurrectionist police. Characters: King-CEO Algernon Stavros
Succession: varied MO: Original Akhtar absorbed almost all of heavy-weaponry specialized Gulbrandsen and since then Taluqdar has been producing aesthetic and light Sparrows renowned for their speed and their high-power energy melee weapons. Taluqdar are currently at the forefront of deep-space exploration and also manufacture excellent radars and scopes - they work closely with Hoshino and the two companies pool their electronics experts to great effect.
Ain Soph Aur Succession: unknown MO: A new, humanist insurrectionist group led by refugees from DOLPHIN, Ain Soph Aur has the kind of heft that even its doomed predecessor could only dream of - no other rebellion has been so successful at disrupting company operations. With revolutionary Gevurah technology and legendary public speakers, this group of freedom fighters or terrorists may be the biggest threat ever to the might of the capitalist regime. Characters: Eulalia Stavros, Rhyddrch Cnaimhin
Succession: unknown MO: A relatively small revolutionary group, Sans-culottes is often considered a more sinister version of Ain Soph Aur. It's roughly equivalent to the difference between crust-punk and glam rock - the former is about heavy, dirty, no-frills riffs and getting the message across in the loudest way possible, while the latter is as much concerned about appearance as it is sound. To put it more bluntly, Sans-culottes is about doing whatever it deems necessary, regardless of the public's opinion, whereas Ain Soph Aur has a strict set of moral codes it must follow, including not subscribing to "the end justifies the means". Thus, though they share information and technology, they are not very close. This is as much due to the differences in opinion on a 'perfect' society - Ain Soph Aur aims for a much more socialist society, while Sans-culottes plans for a form of controlled capitalism - as it is the distinct set of codes. DESTROYED / MERGED companies and organizations that are no longer on the playing field ICARUS Now: Vulperion (primary), others (minority) Reason: Difference of opinion amongst board of directors. Half split to form Vulperion. Others merged into other companies. MO: One of the four original companies; one of the older and more powerful ones – they specialized in the biological sciences but were starting to explore other directions, which split even this ancient giant, made fragile by pressure from Glasslyn and TIANLONG. Most of its property and employees went to Vulperion, but many disappeared to others.
Pathkey Now: others (primary) Reason: Routed by Glasslyn and TIANLONG; was specialized but too small to survive combined onslaught and shattered. MO: Pathkey produced unique heavy weaponry Sparrows that used animal quadruped structures to support their incredibly heavy weapons: powerful with support but too specialized to protect the small company, which was crushed by the two superpowers sharing the continent.
Akhtar United Now: Taluqdar (primary), Hoshino Heavy Industries (minority) Reason: Merged MO: When the Phalanx first appeared, it was with Akhtar United as a driving force. The Indian-based company could utilize incredible manpower but also afford to specialize, and their merger with Guldbrandsen gave them a shot of expertise in heavy weaponry. Some of Akhtar's employees were unhappy with the move and left for Hoshino.
Gulbrandsen Now: Taluqdar Reason: Merged MO: A small but influential heavy weaponry producer, joining Akhtar to become Taluqdar after enjoying a run of excellence and good reputation threatened by pressure from Glasslyn on its borders. Parts from before the merger are rare but sought after for their almost legendary toughness and ballistic power.
Maxim Now: destroyed (primary) scattered (minority) Reason: Destroyed by Aur Soph Ain MO: Previously known for aggressive peacekeeping and producing basic Sparrow structural frames, Maxim was almost totally obliterated by Aur Soph Ain after destroying insurrectionist group DOLPHIN. Their entire leadership structure was decimated, and the only survivors from their policing unit are now mercenaries with legendary reputations.
DOLPHIN Now: destroyed (primary) scattered (minority) Reason: Routed by Maxim MO: A militant reactionary group standing against the Phalanx until it was eventually destroyed by Maxim's police force, DOLPHIN has been blamed for the A03 Disaster and any other unclaimed insurrectionist action since their formation. They were once hailed to be the saviour of the poor, taking up the mantle of Robin Hood and the socialist revolutionary heroes of the past, but its reputation has been dirtied since its destruction, although many of its members continue their work in DOLPHIN's spiritual successor, Aur Soph Ain.

SUBSIDIARIES AND GRASSROOTS more minor companies and organizations Although the Phalanx own everything at the highest level, this doesn't mean you would walk into a Talqudar-branded supermarket to buy GM-branded cigarettes and a bottle of TIANLONG soda. The major companies own hundreds of smaller corporations called Actions, and these Actions own shares in the smaller companies. For example, GM has an Action grown out of Ford motors that is still called the Ford Action, and other Actions named for founders or the companies they started out as. You can still buy a pack of Marlborough cigarettes or a bottle of Coca-cola, but these companies' shares are owned maybe in part by Hoshino's Sakamoto Action and Galt's Taggart Action. This means although whichever company you work for, you are an employee of one of the Phalanx corporations, but you may never be involved with their direct workings. The only physical material that the major companies deal in are space and Sparrow goods and holdings.
The following list contains some plot-relevant or character-owned minor companies and Actions.
BioCryst Technologies: [ Improving the Quality of Life for You. ] BioCryst Technologies is a company that specifies in Aspect creation and are the leading Action in Aspect production. It is co-owned by a number of the Phalanx companies and benefits greatly from the pooled funds, dealing in everything from pet and pleasure models to military apparatuses. They have stores in nearly every major city with the look of a high end car dealership; clean showrooms and people looking to sell you upgrades and new models. While many important subsidiaries of the Action are located on the Aeropoli it's main building is situated on the outskirts of Xenon. It plays host to the company's largest manufacturing plant and their signature supercomputer MAL [ Maximized Automatic Logarithm ], who regulates and oversees nearly all of the company happenings. Of course, there are other things BioCryst does not release to the public; but that's on a need to know basis.
Bezsél: Bezsél is not an organization so much as an understanding and does not have stocks and does not belong to any of the Phalanx companies or their Actions. It organizes ranking amongst pilots if their companies do not keep such lists, manages bountyheads, and keeps databases of available freelance work: it is invaluable for freelance pilots and often considered to “manage” or serve as an agent for most mercenaries. It is mostly run by retired pilots and Knights and has branches is most major cities. It releases digital newsletters straight to Sparrow computers.
